Our History

Sitting in the comfort of Philadelphia Spiritualist Church with its warm, friendly atmosphere you could be forgiven for thinking that this is where it all started, but it wasn’t

It all started in a building over 20 years ago called The Hut in Fence Houses, and that is exactly what it was! A large wooden hut where spiritualists gathered two or three times a week for their meetings. Despite all this it was just as vibrant as it is now in Philadelphia.

The founding medium who ran the church was called Mrs Gray with the help of her daughter Jean and also Eddie Millington.  Mrs Gray's portrait hangs in Philadelphia Church to this day.  No luxuries like central heating in the hut, the place was heated by calor gas heaters.  But people from all walks of life passed through this little wooden hut.

Then came the news that the hut was to come down, so the search was on to find a new place.  The Methodists Chapel in Chapel Row in Philadelphia was found.  It had been closed for a long time and was very dusty.  A home to a hundred and one spiders!!!!  The members armed with dusters, buckets and mops set to work cleaning up the chapel.  New carpets and chairs were ordered and a lot of work was done by a lot of people to bring Philadelphia up to scratch.

If you look up at the ceiling in Philadelphia you will see a beautiful wood ceiling, this was varnished by Eddie Millington, a marathon task indeed!

So this Spiritualist Church has gone from strength to strength over the years, with hundreds of speakers passing through its doors, bringing upliftment and comfort to everyone who enters its doors.

Every week in Spiritualist Churches you can see little miracles happen when people come in laden with grief and sorrow, then after a communication with their loved ones, they leave with a lighter heart and Philadelphia fulfils this role every time its doors are open.
